While other local governments are looking for ways to defund or cut back on their police departments, Pierce County is looking for ways to make our communities safer.
The Seattle City Council slashed its budget for the police and are laying off up to 100 officers. This is a great opportunity to attract good, well-trained police officers to our Sheriff’s department.
Last week, I lifted the county hiring freeze so we could pursue talented candidates like those being laid off in Seattle. We are also offering a hiring bonus to help bring more officers to Pierce County.
We are continuing to have important conversations about ensuring our law enforcement and justice systems are fair, and just, and equitable. And having well-trained sheriffs is a key part of that strategy.
