These past few days have been rough…
Monday night, we had a dangerous combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and unusually strong winds. They brought down powerlines throughout Pierce County and started major wildland fires. I have spent the last few days at the sites of fires and coordinating with our first responders on the ground. These are things I never thought I would see…
Wednesday, I proclaimed an Emergency which gives us access to more state resources and greater flexibility in our county rules to support our community. I am very thankful that despite the numerous fires, fueled by more high winds, no one has been seriously injured – not a civilian or first responder!
Here is what we know now:
- The Graham Fire has been contained. Its size was estimated to be about 275 acres, destroying at least 5 homes. The community has since returned to their homes.
- Serious smoke is headed our way.
- The Sumner grade fire which burned 800 acres and closed SR410 all week is in a much better condition. Powerline repair is underway and some residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
- The Wapato Hills Fire in Tacoma has been contained.
